Gardening with a Purpose

Vegetables

According to numerous surveys, vegetable gardening is up 20% from the previous year and seems to be climbing.  Many beginning gardeners are learning the advantages of growing their own produce. One benefit is that you can ensure that your family is consuming produce that is grown to your standards. This can be especially important to those seeking naturally grown food.  Another advantage is the enhanced flavor of the produce. Nothing tastes better than a fresh picked tomato from your own backyard! And, during these tough economic times, many have concluded that growing your own fruits, veggies, and herbs can prove to be fiscally responsible. Perhaps you too can discover the many rewards of vegetable gardening.

Don’t think you have enough time or space? Consider growing herbs and veggies in pots.  Ask us for help in choosing the best varieties for edible container gardening. Also, check out a newly arrived paperback entitled “DIGGING IT”. It is an excellent low cost guidebook for the beginning vegetable gardener.

Helpful tip about cold weather gardening…

Pay close attention to the nighttime temperatures and if there is a frost advisory, cover your plants with a sheet or towel to protect from frost damage. See more Gardening Tips for this month.

A Fresh Awakening…and a Delicious Spring and Summer Planting Guide

Spring is fickle and we never know what to expect but one thing is for sure, every gardener gets the itch right about now to dig in, feel the dirt. Before starting to dig is good to have a plan.  As mentioned above, everything I’ve been reading suggests that edible gardens (herbs, fruit, and vegetables) are on the rise.  I know I plan on mixing some tomatoes and peppers throughout my flower beds.  It’s a great way to cut down on your food bill and eat healthy.  You can use this as a basic guide on what to plant, when, and with other plants (interplanting).

See our Spring Planting Guide .
