Trend Watch
Growing Up: Vertical Gardening
A
rising trend among gardeners is vertical gardening. It is
much more than a flowering clematis growing up onto a trellis or
a hanging basket of petunias suspended off your back porch - it
can add a whole new facet to your landscape.
Vertical gardening is a great option for those with a small
yard, but can be utilized by all gardeners. Use it to
disguise unattractive parts of your landscape such as a blank
wall or chain link fence. Growing plants vertically can
help add privacy or block wind and even add a much needed focal
point to your landscape. Other advantages are ease of
weeding, pruning, and harvesting of fruits and vegetables means
that gardeners of all abilities can access plants.
There
are many options when growing plants up off of the ground.
hanging baskets, planters, trellises, and arbors are just a few
containment choices to get your vertical garden started.
Interest in vertical gardening but not sure where to begin?
Stop in today and the staff at Reilly's can help you get
started.

Tips for the Season
A
Fresh Awakening... and a Delicious Spring and Summer Planting
Guide
Spring is fickle and we never know what to expect but one
thing is for sure, every gardener gets the itch right about now
to dig, feel the dirt. Before starting to dig it is good
to have a plan. As mentioned above, everything I've been
reading suggests that edible gardens (herbs, fruits, and
vegetables) are on the rise. I know I plan on mixing some
tomatoes and peppers throughout my flower beds. It's a
great way to cut down on your food bill and eat healthy.
You can use this as a basic guide on what to plant, when and
with other plants (interplanting). See our
Spring Vegetable Planting Guide.
